January 2025 Update!

Hey all, it’s offsetting season! So this January we have more cheerful news. We made some sales! Nothing to brag about but it is still something.

We have made 3 sales on itch.io and while one transaction was a test we will still compensate it.

Websites sales for all time include 5 orders so far, 4 of which were tests using site currency. All the same we will compensate them.

This brings our total number of sales to compensate to 8. That’s 8 trees to plant, at $0.35 each through our planting partner Trees.org.

To support my, the founder’s, footprint during my carbon neutral strike, I will offset the average emissions of music streaming through Fastfrwrd. This is a personal offset being made through the Fastfrwrd project in order to test out how to make the strike more bearable and doable.

I also commute now so I believe it would be beneficial to offset that as well even though the buses are public and run on a greener fuel.

The average emissions of music streaming is:

“If you listen to music for just one hour a day, that’s about 1000 hours a year. If each hour emits, say, 100 grams of CO2, you’re looking at 100 kilograms of CO2 annually from just your music streaming habits.” [Source: https://toxigon.com]

I listen to music all day sometimes. So let’s multiply the CO2 emissions for say 8 hours of music/podcasts. 800kg. One mature tree absorbs about 21kg of CO2, according to One Tree Planted: “the average tree absorbs an average of 10 kilograms, or 22 pounds, of carbon dioxide per year for the first 20 years.”

This means I would need to plant 80 trees which at $0.35 comes out to $28 for intense music and podcast streaming. This is the cost of two to three months’ streaming subscription. I’m using SoundCloud at the moment but struggling to feel entertained by the music suggestions sometimes. However offsetting music streaming makes sense for me during my strike.

According to Navit, local buses emit 93grams per kilometer.

My commute is 17km shared taxi (route taxis) and public bus on greener fuel that emits less. At 93g per km, I would emit 1.581 kg per commute, twice a day 5 days a week that makes 15.81kg per week for my commute.

One tree absorbs 10kg. For this month, if I were to offset my commute, it would require 6.3 trees planted costing $2.21. Multiply by 12 and to offset my commute for a year I must send $26.56. That’s for another month.

For now, I will offset 1 year of music/podcast streaming and a month of commute, totaling $30 and planting nearly 100 trees. Add the 8 Fastfrwrd transactions and that brings us to $32.80 to be donated to Trees.org
