We had a blog on Canva before. It was written close after the effect of “The Stellar” TTRPG that we created took its toll as well as life circumstances of Founder, Aleya Jobson. It may be peppered with opinion and some ill-effects of the writing process and reflect a perturbed mental state. That said, there’s still some good and useful stuff in there.
Enjoy.
Green Opensource Messenger Instances 27.05.2024
I don’t know about you but the hunt for an ecological messenger platform has been irritating. The final fix seems to be self-hosting an Opensource messenger service on sustainable servers. Of the major choices available, here are the top three, ranked by order.
Who would want to help us have a green offshoot of these services?
Wire (preferred)Â https://wire.com/en
Wire makes me feel like a snitch but I have a song that seems to allude to it and I usually use my songs as guideposts, it’s a fun superstition of mine based on the concept that my music is so very based on all the things I find important that there is no better way to discern my beliefs. That is why, btw, I believe in art therapy for all, it’s another medium for self-knowledge and decision-making.
So, the Wire. Wire proports to be the most secure messenger but that is a claim Element boasts too.
Here is a link to their GitHub (another name I disapprove of, what a way to pick on nerds by calling them gits…)
https://github.com/wireapp/wire
Signal – requires a phone number https://www.signal.org/
Signal is Opensource but I won’t waste words and “SEO” elaborating, they’re good, the UI is clean but if you lose a number you basically lose your account, so guard your phone carefully from theft – this does not work for travelers who change chips and lose things and I work with travelers a lot.

Element from Matrix.org – if it doesn’t trigger paranoia for you go for it https://element.io/
Element claims to be secure, you don’t have to have a number but it’s hosted through matrix.org which just triggers paranoia for anyone stuck in record alignment and symbolic thought bubbles and tapioca language where everything just seems to have significance and connection and meaning. It’s overload. I don’t want to do anything online on matrix sorry.
It seems to be made for collaborating however going beyond being a simple messenger service.

If you end up hosting a green messenger service please use a Canva account to comment on this article and share the link with us. Crewdle has some messaging but no notifications.
Toodles,
Aleya
