Previous Fastfrwrd Blog: Flat Hierarchies and Solidarity Economics 30.05.24

We had a blog on Canva before. It was written close after the effect of “The Stellar” TTRPG that we created took its toll as well as life circumstances of Founder, Aleya Jobson. It may be peppered with opinion and some ill-effects of the writing process and reflect a perturbed mental state. That said, there’s still some good and useful stuff in there.

Enjoy.

Flat Hierarchies and Solidarity Economics 30.05.24

I don’t have much energy today so this will probably be short and sweet. Typing on a tablet is tedious.
People are all experts in their own lives. We are learning machines and whether it’s code or water cooler chats that leave you relaxed, each employee has a specialization to offer. While one may not require water-cooler chat Thomas right away, this still means the team you compile, once they are all necessary, should be regarded as a team of experts as each individual is specialized in being themselves and having their interest.
E.g. some generalist who happens to know all football trivia there is. That person may just be in the wrong workplace, they are valuable just perhaps not to every organization.
Hiring means discerning specialty, expertise, values and problem-solving preference and methodology.
Once these things align, you have found your team member. At this point, no one is any more special or valuable than another and therefore they deserve equal pay, equal equity, equal say.
One point is how to resolve conflict. Normally hierarchy determines conflict resolution. However, this solves bottlenecks, it does not necessarily address fundamental issues and it can leave a sour aftertaste of resentment.
For this reason it is important to invest in HR whether hiring or contracting, and/or getting a mentor or counselor to help navigate fundamental disagreements or just any sort of conflict while still respecting team equality.
One thing about this type of solidarity is that it needs to go through many stress tests before it can be trusted fully. A probationary year is required. Also a pay cap of 100k per annum for each Revshare participant with the rest going to boosting ESG.
This is how I do business. It just seems fair.
